Snowshoe rental a hit at Manchester Public Library | Local News

MANCHESTER – Residents viewed the entire Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library rental racket collection.

“We were delighted to see the immediate enthusiasm for rackets in circulation; all adult pairs and most child pairs were checked within the first five hours, ”library director Sara Collins said in a prepared statement. “Also, the first hour these checkouts started, we were getting calls from other libraries across the state because of the snowshoe traffic. A few pairs have already circulated twice.

Library staff have started loaning 14 new pairs of snowshoes – six adult sizes and eight child sizes – to anyone with a Manchester library card from mid-February. Inspiration for the program came from the Vermont State Public Health Department, which has partnered with 50 of its libraries to offer snowshoe rentals.

Program costs of nearly $ 1,500 in Manchester were split between library gift accounts and funding for Cape Ann Mass in Motion. The Gloucester-based group is a division of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Municipal Wellness and Leadership Initiative that aims to increase physical activity, fight obesity and advocate for access to healthy food in Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex.

“Snowshoeing has long been a favorite pastime for many people in Cape Ann and we are proud to be able to provide this opportunity for residents to participate or even try it for the first time,” said Karin Carroll, Gloucester Director of Public Health. in a prepared statement. “In these difficult times, being able to get out and participate in safe and socially remote activities can do wonders for your physical and mental health. We have already seen tremendous interest in this loan program and hope to be able to expand it further in the future.

Those wishing to rent snowshoes must sign a liability waiver and loan agreement before or during collection of the equipment. An instruction booklet and map of suitable snowshoe sites around Cape Ann and the North Coast are included with each rental. After the seven day rental period is over, customers will be charged $ 5 per day in late fees.
