Put on your snowshoes… it’s yeti time • Snowshoe Magazine
This year marks the largest series of Yeti snowshoes in Canada to date since its inception in 2001. Good news for friends of the West Coast. The snow arrived just in time for the opening weekend of the season. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the Yeti will test your snowshoeing ability and bring your passion for the outdoors to the trails. Along with a few hundred other outdoor enthusiasts and of course the iconic abominable snowman, the Yeti Snowshoe series is one of a kind.
Designed by the trail running gurus at 5Peaks, the course options are for everyone, of all skill levels and abilities. Sport (5 to 6K) or enduro (10Km) are clearly marked trails, semi-snuffed with a progressive slope. 2014 Race Director Solana Klassen describes the series as fun and engaging for everyone. Unlike many competitive races, you can even walk it. The Yeti vibe is really all about enjoying the outdoors without the pressure. Atlas snowshoe rentals are available on site if needed.
The beauty of snowshoeing is that it really is a family sport. Bring the whole family and take part in the free 1 km run for kids with your mini me’s. If you are new to the sport of snow running, be sure to try out a racquet model before the event. Much lighter than recreational snowshoes, running rackets are best worn with a traditional running shoe.
Keep an eye out for the Yeti’s Facebook page for upcoming pre-race clinics, a chance to practice and socialize before your race dates. Food, coffee and prizes await you at the finish line. The more the merrier, so invite your friends to join in with you. A few tips for beginners: Don’t over-dress, train on the trails or on your bike before the race, and don’t kill it from the start. Slow but steady wins the race.
Put on your snowshoes and try something new this season. Please note: snowshoe racing is becoming more and more popular and very addictive.
Online registration closes Thursday evening at midnight before each event. Register here!
