Which winter hiking gear is the best?

Hiking in winter is a challenge compared to the milder seasons, but the thrills and beauty of winter are just as fascinating. Fans of extreme cold who decide to tackle the trails in the heart of winter will find a white world full of wonder. However, having the right equipment is essential to handle the colder temperatures and humid environment.

While different people will have their clothing preferences, it’s critical to bring the 10 essentials, waterproof gear, base layers, and extra clothing in case of an emergency. It is also good to have a source of fire and emergency blankets on hand.

Assess winter in your area

Winter hiking means different things depending on where you live. A cold winter in New England will require much warmer gear that takes into account deep snow and subzero temperatures, while a southern winter can mean dealing with patches of ice here and there.

Think about winter where you live. Is there a lot of snow? What are the low temperatures? Questions like this will answer how much protection you need and what gear you should bring and potentially save you money.

Equipment

A hand auger is more difficult to use than an electric auger, but by keeping the blades sharp and clean, it should cut most ice in under 10 seconds.

Which ice fishing gear is the best?

For many, the winter season sets the stage for the thrills of cold weather activities that are not possible in other seasons. Anglers can still fish in the winter, and despite the freezing temperatures, there’s nothing quite like being out on the ice with good friends and a pop-up shelter.

For beginners, ice fishing can be intimidating as it requires more equipment than standard reel and cast fishing. It can be an affordable and fun pastime to keep you busy during the winter season, especially in northern latitudes.

You will need different rods and lures depending on the type of fish you are fishing

With ice fishing, the rod, reel, and lures really depend on what you are fishing. There are some great fishing rods, reels, and versatile tackle out there, but it’s worth learning which fish live in your area. If you’re on a budget, get a cheap rod and basic supplies like jigs and live baits like nocturnal caterpillars or minnows.

  • Perch are easier to catch with worms, spoons or jigs. It is better to use a light rod with a faster action.
  • For pike, you need a heavier and sturdier rod because these are bigger fish. Minnows, live or frozen, work well as do jigs and spoons.
  • Golden are medium sized fish, so using a medium rod will work. Minnows, dead baits, spoons and jigs work well for catching walleye.

Whether you are a snow sports enthusiast or a weekend enthusiast in the resort, there are always more ways to make the most of your time in the mountains. Apps and gadgets that keep track of your turns in the resort can help you improve your game, regardless of your skill level. And gear to protect your phone and can prevent an epic powder day from turning into “the day you dropped your phone off a chairlift”.

Or, you can give my favorite gift: the gift of warmth. Because even though I like to spend a day in the mountains, I to hate be cold. You can layer whatever you want, but some gear really gets the extra battery-powered heat.

Burton Toaster trunk liners

Will Lipman Photography for Engadget / Burton

The only thing worse than cold fingers are cold toes, especially when strapped to snowboard bindings. Burton’s Toaster boot liners may look like typical boot lines, but they have tiny built-in heaters that can keep your toes warm and, more importantly, dry, for up to five hours at a time. The slippers come in both men’s and women’s sizes and are designed to be compatible with all existing Burton boots, so you can upgrade your existing setup without purchasing a whole new pair.

Buy Burton Toaster Boot Protectors at Backcountry – $ 100

Hangtime Gear Koala smartphone harness

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Will Lipman Photography for Engadget / Hangtime Gear

At least half of my time on the mountain is on the chairlifts (thanks, the slopes) which means I inevitably take my phone out on the chairlift against my better judgment. I haven’t given up on it yet, although I’ve had a few uncomfortably close calls. That’s where the Hangtime Gear Koala Harness comes in. Simply clip your phone to the harness and attach the leash to a pocket or backpack strap. The extendable leash will give you plenty of slack for taking a selfie or taking a call, but will prevent your phone from collapsing to freezing death if you accidentally let it go.

Buy a Koala smartphone harness from Hangtime Gear – $ 25

Kivetai half mask

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Will Lipman Photography for Engadget / Kivetai

It might not be the most attractive accessory, but I like this inexpensive fleece goggle better than any ski goggles I’ve tried. The half-mask design means it’s easy to put on and take off without disturbing your helmet, and the integrated earmuffs keep it in place while keeping your ears warm. I started wearing mine last year when many resorts required guests to mask themselves in elevator lines due to COVID-19. I was not disappointed: the fleece was much more comfortable than the standard fabric or the surgical mask, which are quite miserable in cold or humid weather. But after wearing it for an entire season, I’m ready to definitely ditch all my other ski goggles and keep them in my ski bag for seasons to come.

Buy a half mask on Amazon – $ 11

Mercury Jacket Department of Supply

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Ministry of Supply

At $ 500, the Department of Supply’s Mercury Jacket is certainly one of the most expensive outerwear you can buy, but it’s more than just a jacket. The Mercury has three strategically placed carbon fiber heating elements woven into the jacket liner. Reconnect the included battery, turn on the power switch – yes, the jacket has a power switch – and they’ll warm up to provide a constant source of pleasant warmth. It might not seem like something you need every day, but the Mercury is surprisingly versatile. It’s insulated and looks good enough that you can wear it on the hottest days, but the heating means you can keep it on even when the conditions get colder.

Buy a Mercury Jacket from Ministry of Supply – $ 500

Outdoor Research Gripper Gloves

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Outdoor research

If you are looking for a performance winter glove, there is nothing better than the windproof and waterproof Gore-Tex. But while Gore-Tex can keep you dry, it’s not the warmest material, which is why Gore-Tex gloves often come with extra liners for extra insulation. But double gloving can be painful, and sometimes even two gloves aren’t enough to keep your fingertips from going numb. The Gripper gloves from Outdoor Research offer the best of both: Gore-Tex gloves with integrated and adjustable heating elements. If that’s too expensive, or you just need a lighter spring glove, we’re big fans of the TrailHeads convertible mittens too. Half fingerless, half mitt, the gloves are surprisingly warm considering their lighter weight, and the unique hybrid design makes them easy to put on and take off in a snap.

Buy Gripper Gloves From Outdoor Research – $ 200 Buy TraiHeads Mitts From Amazon – $ 34

Phoozy Apollo thermal case

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

idiot

We all know the cold is hard on our batteries, and sometimes even your warmest pockets aren’t insulated enough to save them. Enter Phoozy’s Apollo Thermal Case: The cooler case will keep your phone from getting too cold and should dramatically extend your battery life in cold weather. Best of all, the reflective material – supposedly inspired by space suits worn by astronauts – can also protect your phone from excessive heat so that it can be a year-round accessory.

Buy a thermal phone case on Amazon – $ 30

Skeo Snowcookie Sensor

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Skéo

If you really want to improve your skiing skills, Skeo’s Snowcookie Sensor can help you get there. The kit comes with three battery powered sensors: one to wear on a chest harness and one for each ski. The sensors connect to an app on your phone and measure a range of measurements from the angles of your skis and hips to the distribution of your weight on your skis. When you’re done on the mountain, the app breaks down your technique with detailed analysis and tips to improve yourself.

Buy Snowcookie Sensor from Skeo – $ 449

Premium slopes

Articles for the Engadget 2021 holiday gift guide

Tracks

Slopes has been my go-to app every time I’ve been in the mountains for years. Start the ski tracker app before your first chair and the app logs stats like speed and altitude while you ski or snowboard. At the end of the day, the app creates a summary of your day with all your stats. If you want to take it a step further, you can even watch a replay of all your runs overlaid on a resort map so you can see exactly what you’ve been up to. Even if you only go out a few times a year, Slopes is a great way to track your season and relive your best days in the mountains all year round.

Effective layering is essential when hiking in winter, starting with long underwear. Quality base layers will wick sweat away from your skin, keeping you warm and dry. Every expert we spoke to recommended long underwear made from merino wool, which is exceptionally warm and breathable even when wet, and also combats odor. For overnight trips, the leader of REI’s virtual outfitting team, Forrest Jarvi, suggests bringing a spare pair of extra long underwear to sleep in if you can sacrifice the weight.

Chyla Anderson, founder of outdoor representation company Outdoorism, calls her Smartwool base layers “much softer and more comfortable than others I’ve tried,” adding that they don’t itch either. The brand has been mentioned by everyone we spoke to and is a favorite of strategists for the colder months.

If you don’t have the budget for wool base layers, our experts have advised you that synthetic diapers will still work. Just make sure you don’t buy anything made from cotton, which dries slowly and doesn’t retain body heat.

Anything you put on your base layers will act as insulation, and there are a variety of materials that can be used for this purpose, including synthetic fleece, wool, and down. If you sweat at low altitudes and don’t face too much wind, rain, or snow, you might not want to wear a full down jacket on the go – a lighter fleece option, or even a T -shirt, can be more comfortable. Just be sure to carry something thicker when you stop. “You can get cold very quickly,” warns Herndon-Powell. “So it’s important to change your diapers before you even need them. Wilkinson agrees, adding that you should constantly layer yourself up and down on the trail as it feels like work. “It’s a problem, it really is,” he said. “But just take the time; it will make the trip so much better.

Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Vest (Women)

Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket (Men)

For hikers who run hot, Kindra Ramos, director of communications and outreach at the Washington Trails Association, suggests a fleece vest to keep your core warm but your arms “free and cooler” as you hike.

Smartwool Hudson Trail Fleece Full Zip (Women's)

Smartwool Hudson Trail Fleece Full Zip Jacket (Men)

This jacket from Smartwool has all the benefits of merino wool, which our experts said was the gold standard for winter hikers and backpackers. The full zipper also helps regulate the temperature on the go.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Hoodie (Women's)

Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Hoodie

As a reliable synthetic mid-layer, Jarvi recommends the Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoodie, which is lightweight and reliable even when wet. He says it’s probably “my single most used garment living in Colorado.”

Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket (Women)

Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket (Men)

Whitman says the classic Patagonia Nano Puff, which is more windproof than the other options mentioned here, is both warm and pleasant to walk on.

Marmot Tallus down jacket

Whitman is also a fan of the Marmot Tullus, especially for mountaineering, due to his tighter sleeves which allow for more dexterity.

Amazon Essentials Hooded Long Sleeve Quilted Jacket for Women

Anderson recently traded in her bulky 3-in-1 Columbia for this quilted jacket from Amazon Essentials and was pleased with the results. “It’s reasonably priced, it’s available in a variety of colors and – surprisingly – it holds up in cold weather,” she says. “I have the color dark camel and I like its neutrality. So far this coat has kept me warm in the desert and in the mountains.

Our experts have advised you to pack an outer layer of clothing that will protect you from wind, rain and snow. Because you already lock in heat with your base and mid layers, something lightweight but waterproof will work here. “I like an all-weather thin raincoat that’s big enough to fit over a down jacket,” says Herndon-Powell. Rather than waterproof pants, many of our experts have favored gaiters, which allow more flexibility on the track.

Patagonia Snowshot Jacket

Jarvi says your regular rain jacket will likely be good for non-extreme trail conditions. If you’re looking to improve yourself, the Patagonia Snowshot is loved by winter hikers and backpackers because “it’s designed like a ski jacket but without a ton of extra insulation.” The jacket is constructed with extra length, “which is great because you don’t have a seam going up behind your backpack.” If you shop, Parker adds that any Gore-Tex jacket “is a great investment because it will keep you from getting wet from falling snow.”

REI Co-op backpack gaiters

Wilkinson tells us that gaiters are too often overlooked. He calls them “fantastic gear” for insulating your legs, keeping snow off your shoes, and preventing snags when you hit the trails. Ramos adds that they are also “much easier to put on and take off” than rain pants.

Winter hiking pants mostly depend on your personal preferences and weather conditions, especially if you have a pair of gaiters to protect your boots. Some of our experts go on a winter hike in their sticky underwear, perhaps with shorts and gaiters worn over them, while others prefer to put on trekking pants over their underwear. If you opt for pants, Jarvi advises to opt for “flexible pants that stretches and wicks snow very easily”.

Klash Women's Trousers KÜHL (Women)

KÜHL Klash Pants (Men)

Jarvi says these pants, which would suit any season, have “good stretch,” as well as a snap at the bottom that you can clip to your hiking boots to create a makeshift gaiter. They also have plenty of pockets for snacks.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Pant (Women's)

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Pant (Men's)

For a better fit, Jarvi mentioned this slim option from Arc’teryx, which “looks like climbing pants”.

Salomon Quest-4 GTX Hiking Boots (Women's)

Salomon Quest-4 GTX Hiking Boots (Men's)

“It’s not necessarily always true that everyone will need insulated boots in the winter,” says Wilkinson. “A lot of it depends on the temperature, the weather conditions, whether it’s wet or dry, and the individual: some people’s feet always freeze and they will need more insulation. . On the budget side, it’s better to invest in a quality waterproof boot that can be used in all seasons, like these Gore-Tex Salomons that Whitman uses in winter and summer. Whether you wear running shoes, light boots, or heavy boots, Wilkinson notes that “it is absolutely essential” to keep circulation in your feet. “The best way to do this is to make sure you have shoes that are at least one size larger than what you normally wear,” he says. “The toes need room to extend and wiggle.”

Darn Tough Vermont Hiker Boot Full Cushion Sock (Women's)

Darn Tough Merino Wool Boot Sock Full Cushion (Men's)

Contrary to what one might think, thick hiking socks are less effective than thin insulated socks. The material your socks are made from is much more crucial than the weight, and again, our experts have been evangelical about the benefits of wool. “Cotton socks in particular, if they get wet they will stay that way forever and you are going to be miserable,” says Ramos. “The material really makes a difference in winter conditions. Parker agrees, “If there’s only one wool item you’re going to invest in, make sure it’s wool socks. Vermont brand Darn Tough, which advertises a lifetime warranty on its socks, was mentioned favorably by everyone we spoke to. Jarvi says it’s worth paying extra for the brand’s merino wool socks on multi-day trips because they’re odor-resistant. “Which is handy, especially if you are sharing a tent.”

REI Co-op 2.0 Lining Gloves

Outdoor Search Lighting Sensor Gloves

REI Co-op Guide Insulated Mitts

Gloves are an important item to take on any winter expedition, especially if you are using hiking poles and exposing your fingers to the elements. As with other winter hiking clothing, layering is key here. Herndon-Powell wears soft, tight liner gloves when out on the trail, but keeps a waterproof pair handy for pulling on the uppers. Jarvi and Whitman do the same, but they opt for mittens as a second layer, for extra warmth. Just note that you won’t have much dexterity with these.

A warm hat makes all the difference when hiking in cold weather. When you buy one, our experts say, go for something that completely covers your ears. As long as this requirement is met, a cute beanie that looks great in photos isn’t a bad idea, says Ramos. “Because if you don’t like your hat, you won’t wear it. “

Smartwool The Lid Hat

Jarvi says this beanie “has the most annoying name you can imagine, but it’s extremely comfortable and fits well under a helmet if you’re ski touring.”

Smartwool Merino 250 Balaclava

While this is probably unnecessary for many trips, a few of our experts have said that a merino balaclava or choker like this from Smartwool would be a good investment.

Outdoor Search Seattle Sombrero

If you hike in the rain, do like the Pacific Northwest and don a Seattle Sombrero. Ramos says these wide-brimmed rain hats are especially useful if you wear glasses.

CAMP Eyewear Trail Polarized Sunglasses

Neutrogena Ultra Dry-Touch SPF 55 Sunscreen

Polarized sunglasses are underrated if you are going to the mountains on a clear winter day. “Especially if you are hiking at a higher elevation, sunlight can be incredibly powerful, especially when reflecting off white snow,” Parker explains. While you’re at it, don’t forget the sunscreen.

Riders Republic is a sports video game from Ubisoft released on October 28. It allows players to enjoy five different sports, including snowboarding, wingsuit flight, skiing, mountain biking, and rocked wing suit.

However, lately two new issues with this video game have emerged that make it unplayable for some gamers.

Riders Republic Wingsuit does not unlock

Airplay and Wingsuit are the fun part of this video game that lets you fly and explore the open world of sports.

To access the Wingsuit, you must unlock it by earning 30 stars which can be obtained by completing races or playing in multiplayer mode.

However, some players are complaining that they cannot unlock the Wingsuit in Riders Republic even if they are eligible for it with more than enough stars.

Here are some reports for reference:

I have over 140 stars in Riders Republic so I should have had access to the wingsuit for a while now. The only ones I have access to are the funkies (which suck), and the game always tells me to unlock classic wingsuits by “earning XP”. Has anyone been through this? No idea how to fix it. (Source)

I have a bug where I can’t enter the first air event, so I can’t unlock air gear. Anyone have a solution, I understand some people have had this problem with other sports but can’t find a solution! (Source)

As multiple reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) show, this Wingsuit not unlocking issue appears to be widespread and affects many Riders Republic players.

Fortunately, Ubisoft’s support team has confirmed that they are aware of the issue and said the team is currently investigating it. However, there is no ETA for a fix.

Riders Republic snow equipment issue

On the other hand, some players are complaining about buggy Snow Gear, which also makes the game unplayable. According to reports (1, 2, 3), whenever players try to equip Snow Gear, the game does not unlock the space on the wheel.

Here are some reports for reference:

Hi everyone, I started playing and unlocked the winter sports career. But, when I try to equip snow clothes, the game does not unlock the space on the wheel. A known fix for this? I saw this is a common problem, but I can’t figure out how to overcome it. Thanks in advance. (Source)

So I just did the snowboard tutorial and now the game forces me to start the first snow event, I can’t do anything other than press the buttons the game tells me to do. He then tells me to equip the snowgear but when I bring the “sport” menu the snow gear is blocked and I cannot equip it. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? (Source)

Due to this bug where players cannot choose the Snow Gear, they cannot progress beyond the sports wheel tutorial.

Fortunately, this issue has been recognized by Ubisoft support as well and they said the team is currently reviewing it.

Additionally, the support team said they were able to work around the issue by resetting individual accounts and asked those affected to submit their Ubisoft username along with a description of the situation to get additional assistance.

We hope Ubisoft fixes these two annoying bugs with Riders Republic soon and when they do, we’ll update this space with new information, so stay tuned.

Every year in November, the Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation organizes a ski exchange. This marks the 70th year of sale and purchase of lightly used equipment by skiers and snowboarders.

Starting Thursday, anyone can bring their used equipment and clothing to Expo Idaho. From Friday to Sunday, the items will be available for purchase.

“I remember my dad taking me when I was a kid, and I was always so excited to have new gear for the season,” said skier Kiley Laney. “As an adult I’m always excited to go.”

[Ski resorts around Idaho announce upgrades ahead of winter season]

Vendors determine the price of items and volunteers working at the event will help them tag them. Those who sell equipment will receive 75% of the commission, which will be sent by check no later than December 1. The remaining 25% goes to the Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation – a non-profit organization for competitive skiing and snowboarding for children.

The BBSEF posted on its Facebook page that the top 10 most wanted clean and lightly used items include children’s gear, downhill skis, ski boots, snowboards and boots, snowshoes, jackets, pants and clean, warm winter clothes. They will not accept or sell sunglasses, baseball caps, t-shirts or dress shoes.

Admission to the event is $ 5 on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday admission is free with a donation of canned food, which will go to the Boise Rescue Mission. Without canned food, admission is $ 5. Admission is free all weekend for children under 18.

For those who simply wish to sell material, they will not be asked to pay an admission fee.

Items that are not sold must be picked up by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 7.
